Together Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Has the Power to Test Your Relationship.

Here's a challenge for long-term couples who appreciate the horror genre: Settle in with your partner and view Together. This critically acclaimed 2025 movie just made its launch on a streaming platform via Hulu. On the surface, it may seem like typical body horror, but within Together resides a deep contemplation about the ways we decide to love our partners.

A Debut Feature Exploring Relationship Dynamics

Together is the first full-length movie for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It showcases the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as a couple named Tim and Millie, partners that have stayed together for ten years. Having wed in real life in 2017, the actors bring a particular energy to their portrayals, expertly portraying both the good and bad of a long-term relationship.

The plot starts when the couple move from the urban environment to the rural area for professional reasons. A somewhat stereotypical narrative setup, sure, but that’s largely where the conventions cease. Together becomes as much a examination of mental states of the couple's dynamic as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While walking near their country house, a tempest descends, and the two fall into an hole in the earth. After spending the night there and eventually escaping, a mysterious influence begins influencing the duo. This force compels a paranormal intimacy between them that goes far beyond typical partnership.

The complete narrative is a gradually intensifying of scares, blending bits of hallucinatory nightmares, unsettling (but tastefully done) body horror, and genuinely funny exchanges (sometimes in the middle of something grotesque). The director weaves these elements together neatly and wraps them up in a consistently growing atmosphere of fear.

Layered Performances

A significant portion of Together is only the performances of its stars, and they deftly portray countless layers to the characters’ relationship. Millie's sense of self and feeling of intimacy is deteriorating due to a distance. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his hesitance to pursue anything but his struggling artistic pursuits slowly bubbles to the surface.

Conversely, Tim experiences isolation and isolated by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve left the city and distant from his network of friends. He dreads the notion of utterly sacrificing his sense of self in his partner. This fear is amplified by the reality he can’t drive and is dependent on Millie for transportation.

Shanks’ smartest move in this movie refrains from painting either of his characters the obvious villain.

Tim and Millie grapple with the sort of issues that arise in long-term unions after ten years. At their core, they continue to care for each other. They still laugh together, offer support, and are vulnerable at times. But beneath it all, there’s an unavoidable undercurrent of doubt about their relationship.

Thematic Depth

While the supernatural forces in Together act as a metaphor for these fears of codependency and totally devoting oneself to another person, the metaphor avoids being overly obvious or pretentious. Instead, these visceral horror elements provide a ideal counterpart to the character-driven drama. Both the horror and the drama enhance each other in harmony.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s ending, which remains unspoiled, has sparked debate on the film’s ultimate message about enmeshed dynamics. It has been said that those not in relationships have understood the narrative as a strong argument for remaining unattached. Meanwhile, certain partners who were in conflict found that the film actually helped them resolve their issues.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own interpretation could function as a revealing measure of how you perceive partnership. Will the conclusion plant anxiety and horror, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you identify in either protagonist and scream at your TV, or simply glance toward your other half and utter, “I understand that choice”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an test you can experience at this very moment.

Together is currently playing on Hulu's platform now.
